# CHIRP — Full Product and Content Guide

CHIRP is the consumer remote-home platform from CHIRP Wireless. It focuses on consequential home automation: water leaks and shutoff, smoke alerts, freezing risk, vacancy security, privacy-conscious noise and occupancy signals, utility readings, vehicle tracking, and supported remote commands.

## Why CHIRP exists

Single-vendor smart-home apps create lock-in. The first device may be simple, but expansion reveals missing sensor types, incompatible commands, weak long-range options, and fragmented notifications. CHIRP provides a shared operating layer for compatible devices from several manufacturers.

## Connections and capabilities

- LoRaWAN: long-range, low-power sensing through CHIRP's built-in network server. The sensor can be battery-powered, but a gateway needs power and network backhaul.
- MQTT: compatible sensors and controls with manufacturer payloads mapped into shared fields.
- Zigbee2MQTT: compatible Zigbee sensors, plugs, relays, lights, valves, and thermostats brought through MQTT.
- Tracker: cellular/GSM GPS, OBD-II, CAN, and standalone devices. More than 2,000 tracker profiles are preconfigured. LoRaWAN trackers do not use this connector.
- RTSP cameras: a Coming Soon unified experience designed to work with RTSP-capable IP cameras from different manufacturers.

A connected device may report data without accepting commands. All device-directory claims should distinguish connector availability, mapped data, tested status, command support, and caveats.

## Commands and automations

A CHIRP rule can evaluate conditions and send configured commands to compatible controllable devices. Safety-conscious workflows include command verification and a failure branch. A leak workflow can detect wet state, request that a compatible valve close, notify the owner, and escalate when the command fails. A thermostat workflow can request a safe setpoint and report whether the device accepted it.

## AI assistant

The CHIRP AI assistant uses accessible home and device context to answer questions, help add supported sensors, build automations, test logic, create alerts, and request confirmation before important changes. It should explain missing hardware capabilities rather than invent commands.
